Big Chop: Starting Afresh

YOU TOOK THE BOLD STEP! You cut it all off, the relaxed ends and you expected everyone’s reaction to be something like..giphy-downsized-large (1).gif

but instead, you seem to be drawing a lot of….

giphy-downsized-large.gif        YIKES!

WHAT AM I DOING WRONG??

Stay calm. A journey of a thousand miles starts with a step and you just took your first. Like a baby there are several tries to be made before you finally perfect this thing. Good news is it is completely do-able!

1. BE ADVENTUROUS!

At this stage in your journey, you probably haven’t experimented much with natural-hair friendly products before and aren’t exactly sure what will work best for you. You will never really know what agrees most with your hair until you try it. Read wide, research and give a few products a try. Remember, the goal is not to overburden your hair, but to find what works so you can stick to that.

2. RESEARCH

There is a large pool of information on growing long and healthy natural hair that can help you out. Unfortunately, because no one actually regulates what is out there you can stumble upon and get caught up in the net of some fishy hair tips that may not work quite as well on your mane. Research, read wide but try to keep it simple and always verify! Note: not every popular hair tip will work for you. Which brings us to the next point.

3. STUDY YOUR HAIR

Like they say, practice makes perfect. The more you experiment, the more you discover about your hair. As you research into best hair practices and products keep in mind that everyone’s hair reacts differently. Coconut oil may be a life-saver for one person but may result in hair loss in  another person. Experiment with hair products gradually. Change a few things at a time to make it easier to pinpoint where the issue could be coming from.

4. BE OBSERVANT

This is more or less a complement to the previous tip. The best way to study your hair is through observation. Different products may change your hair texture, porosity, density, etc. If you are one to use heat on your hair, be sure to watch for any early signs of heat damage and treat it before it gets baaahd! Look out for and get rid of single strand knots to avoid further damage. Basically, know your hair so well!

5. STYLE IT BABY!

The fact that your hair is short doesn’t mean it has to be boring! There are several twa hairstyle inspirations no matter the length you are at! Dye it, cut it, twist it, do whatever! There are no rules (unless you’re me then you want to stay modest 🙂 ). Hit Google search, save a board on Pinterest, keep coming back here to Mane-tenance for hairstyle inspirations to keep the “wow” factor.

6. HAVE A HAIR REGIMEN

If you’re looking at achieving some serious hair goals you  can’t just be like a feather tossed about by the wind. You must adopt a routine and try to follow it as much as possible. How many times do you want to wash your hair a month? How many protein treatments do you intend to do a month? Which day will you pick as your wash day? What routine will you follow in washing your hair?

7. PROTECT YOUR ENDS!

It can be very

8. PRAY!
